Restaurant Description:
From 'The Leela' website: "As the name would suggest, Zen is the pan-Asian restaurant at The Leela Palace. And bliss from the Orient is what awaits the culinary traveller. Sample Japanese, Thai, Korean, Singaporean and Balinese delights. And if eating at counters catches your fancy, we’ve spoilt you for choice – Sushi, Teppanyaki, Yakitori, Korean barbeque and a noodle bar. And they’re perfectly complemented by a wide choice of drinks, including Japanese Sake and Korean Soju. And if you like to eat to your heart’s content, you’ve come to the right place. Dim Sum, Cantonese for “order to your heart’s content”, is our lunch speciality."

"Garden-side oriental "
The nicest thing I discovered this time at Leela is the landscaped garden, which I had the opportunity to walk and explore this time. To one end of this, beyond a hedge of imported palms, past a walk flanked by oriental sculptures is Zen...the restaurant. It’s in good taste – although there’s nothing overtly oriental about the décor, there are subtle hints of the east and the rest remains non-intrusively modern including an outdoor seating under umbrellas soundtracked by flowing water.

Having heard about the sushi/dumpling Sunday brunch at Zen it didn’t take long before I was seated under and umbrella facing the tranquil 5-star greenness, sighing with satisfaction and release. Then, I was shoved indoors since all the patio tables were booked. But this didn’t matter because they promptly served up drinks – sparkling wine and a cocktail for me (various alcohols are included) – and salads (there were only four): a bean salad which was just okay, an orange salad which I didn’t enjoy, a lemony chicken salad which had good flavour, and sort-of crunchy fried chips which actually turned out best.

Next arrived the dumplings in the traditional steamer but not steaming hot and while I was expecting something darn good these variously stuffed dumplings (shrimp, pork, chicken, veg. etc.) were only good-to-average.
The table was already laden with a platter of sauces, soy, wasabi and gari (pickled ginger) and soon enough a trolley of sushi arrived: Tuna (good), prawn (good), octopus (much too chewy for me), salmon (which tasted nothing like salmon but a spicy masala), and a handful of veg. sushi of which I enjoyed the avocado the best.
And that was it. This really was just a sushi/dumpling brunch.

But by now I had chugged a few drinks and was quite full anyway. Yet, the dessert rack was surprisingly replete and I had to make a few trips so not to miss anything – all of which were very good indeed especially a crunchy coated white chocolate mousse, a hot choc. mudpie, a chocolate mousse cake, a coconut crème, various mango concoctions, other mousses/tarts, and my first taste of the rambutan fruit.

It slipped my mind to check the regular à la carte menu; supposedly it includes Japanese, Thai, Korean, Singaporean and Balinese cuisines, but I did catch a glimpse of the drinks list and it didn’t seem all that endowed: the cocktails and mocktails being few and just the usual.

The winning point of Zen is truly its outdoor, garden-side, water-side ambience; the chopsticks and cutlery are only a plus.

* Avg. meal for two: ~Rs. 2000
