"“Belliss(crea)mo”, one could say"
What’s this thing about Italian food that makes it so irresistible? Perhaps they’ve reached a point in civilization where they can afford to do everything really well – including ice cream. There seem to be hardly any indigenous brands that can match up to the Italian gelato, and ‘mama mia!’ although started in the country by an Indian, is inspired by the traditional recipes of a chef from Bergamo, Italy (as the exclamation of the brand name suggests).
An online promo declared a ‘Summer Fruit Burst Festival’ at ‘mama mia!’, beside it was an irresistible picture of pastel coloured gelato scoops and I was sold. Next thing I knew I was standing at the ice cream counter ogling at the dazzling array – an assortment of Cream Gelato (96% fat free), Fruit Gelato (100% Fat free sorbetto), frozen yogurt, sugar free, shakes and other ‘mama mia! Creations’.
Of course, first there was the tasting which is half the fun. “...A try of the ‘Belgian Dark Chocolate’, please. And, um, ‘Sicily Lemon’ and ‘Ruby Orange’ and ‘Frozen Yogurt’ and ‘Cookie Crumble’ and ‘Nutty Muddy’ and um...” the list was shamelessly long. In the end, I settled on one scoop of ‘Fresh Strawberry’ (which really was very good) and one of ‘Almond Affair’. Then, I suddenly realised my folly because each scoop is exorbitantly priced (not to mention added taxes), so I goaded my accompanying friend to order a more economical sundae instead.
The choice of sundaes is surprisingly small but includes besides the classic ‘Banana Split’ and ‘Hot Choc. Fudge’ such things as “minty ‘After Eight’ gelato with chocolate chips” and ‘Ferrero Rocher Sundae’ and “Blueberry sorbetto with French Vanilla, shortbread biscuits and coulis” etc. But since it was ‘fruit burst’ season, we ordered a ‘Who Cares!’ (“100% fat free. Two fruit gelato, fruits, mango and strawberry sauce”): The fruit gelato selection is small but good, of which we had ‘Alphonso Mango’ and ‘Wine Grape’ but in the end agreed that individual flavours beat the mixed concoctions by far.
The ‘mama mia!’ parlour is small but chic and relaxed and young with an installation of a Fußball table outside. I was well settled on a bank chair, but the light ice cream went down so nimbly that I was soon at the tasting counter again. This time I hit upon ‘Irish Coffee’ which was just delish, but asked for it blitzed into a ‘Caffe Freddo’ shake: This turned out just like any café frappe (the actual ice cream would have been a better choice), but even though it wasn’t enough to launch me into Italian exclamations, it was still quite good.
* Avg. scoop of ice cream: Rs. 60+ * Avg. sundae: Rs. 120-150+
