"M-editerranean(vibe) O-utdoor C-affeine HA-bitat"
Adam is my caffeinated alter ago. This time I was to meet him at Mocha. Now, the last few times I had passed by this joint, it always seemed to be teeming with newts primping their image (while destroying their respiratory system) by passing around hookahs.
"But," I protested to Adam, "I like my lungs pink." "Well, don’t worry about that," he replied "It’s all open-air, and besides, there’s a separate indoor smoking section now. And the menu is worth a glance, you’ll see."
So he talked me into it and to Mocha I went, anticipating coffee and conversation.
He was right; the Mediterranean-esque atmosphere was not half bad with its mottled seating – couches, a mosaic island with umbrellas, extended cements benches, even a tree-house (which was closed). Adam put a finger to the wind and said "To the futons", so I followed him to a canopied higher ground which had the most futons I have seen under one roof. (The indoor smoking room (which I later investigated) was more crowded and compact with plastic chairs, a dingy side room and fruity smog (The menu would reveal many sheesha flavours; regular, special and deluxe)). I was impressed. "I’m impressed," I said. "It is quite friendly and idle."
A waiter dressed in a Mediterranean hat handed us the menu, which actually was interesting. Not only were there many pages of intriguing coffee concoctions from all over the world, everything else on the menu was just as fascinating – excessive desserts, creative milk shakes, sandwiches with European names, tapas, eggs, cookies etal. Plus, it was psychedelically colourful and speckled with trivia and squiggles. I read it cover-to-cover like a mystery novel.
Decisions were tough, but Speedy GonzAdamles blurted, "I’ll have a Toblerone Shake," (a real quick decision considering everything on the list sounded just as good (like Ferrero Rocher/Lindt/ Baileys Irish/Apple Pie/Strawberry cheesecake/Dutch truffle cake shake and more (~ Rs. 150))). I mumbled, fumbled, then caved under pressure and ordered a cold coffee. Adam gave me a restrained "You’re pathetic" look, but I had the last laugh because the coffee (which came looking like a '50s American diner shake) was better than the slightly insipid other.
The music was slowly shifting from Mediterranean electronica to pop rock. Out of curiosity I ordered a Smoked chicken & pesto crème Croque (Rs. 120). As good as the menu makes it sound, food is the failing of Mocha. "This is just a chicken sandwich with cheese on it. What's so Croque about it?" I complained. To which Adam responded by making another speedy order – a B-52 Mousse (Rs. 95) and The Choc Father (White chocolate praline mousse with chocolate ganache, Rs. 145). Desserts here come in oversize pieces, but (surprisingly) disappoint the palate.
By dusk, the funky cloth lampshades came alive and I was making guttural sounds of lazy satisfaction to which Adam could only respond, "It's usually worth a shot."
* Avg. coffee-sandwich-dessert day-out for two: Rs. 500 * Avg. sheesha (double-pipe): Rs. 245 [though a La Italia coffee shot is waaay cooler these days, really]
