"The only place with rustic courtyard steak"
Years ago ‘The Only Place’ was a chic steakhouse on Brigade Road and anytime we were craving meat it would be first in order. Few places in the city served up chunkier steaks or warmer apple pies. Then they closed and eventually re-opened on Museum Road: This joint, according to me was hardly the same. It felt like the quality had dropped; everything was more rustic and...dusty.
So it’s after a long time that I made this call. The ambiance isn’t bad: An open courtyard setting under tiled roof, plenty of air and light; but much too cramped for me, the tables shoved uncomfortably close to each other to accommodate more; not to mention scratched cutlery and all. Yet, it’s definitely the ambience besides the meat that makes it popular.
The menu is meat-heavy: focused on steaks, a few bakes, handful of pastas and a dessert list eminent for its apple pie. I don’t think they serve any alcohol other than beer and the rest of the drinks list is meagre, from which I had an Iced Tea: reasonably priced and not bad.
Flipping through the two-page-long list of steaks speaking of chicken, lamb and beef variations, I suddenly lost my appetite for meat. This was really a silly thing to do at a steakhouse; but for some reason the steak sandwiches and burgers lost their charm too. Then I contemplated ‘Fish n Chips’ or ‘Grilled Sea-Bass’ or other fish...eventually arrived at pasta with meatballs from which I rolled on to the almost non-existent vegetarian choice. Aha, a quiche or a cheesy lasagna would hit the spot; but as luck had it the waiter proceeded to inform me that they were running on generator and bakes were out. This was absurd to me, but not worth arguing about, so I’m embarrassed to say that of all things I ordered a blandish veg. pasta at a steakhouse.
The ‘Fettuccine Alfredo’ was as plain as could be – pasta with white-sauce and a few mushrooms thrown in; and even this, I’m sorry to say, was the least palatable pasta I’ve ever had: It was bland as ever and worse: the sauce was almost curdling and sour; if the cheese hadn't saved it that little bit, it would have been as good as slop.
After that, I was understandably looking forward to dessert and from a list of apple/cherry/peach pie, cheesecakes and chocolate cakes since I’d had the apple before, I got a cherry pie. This was good and bad: Good because the cherries were fresh and juicy and tastefully non-saccharine; bad because the crust tasted old and stale, and the whole thing was floating in too much cream that mitigated it.
Sitting at the edge of the courtyard I watched meat-laden steaks with baked potatoes and sour cream and sloppy joes and ribs and slabs of cake floating by and I could see what makes this place interesting to people.
* Avg. meal for two: Rs. 800

"steaks - the only place"
I always make reservations before I go out on a weekend. I did the same here @ the only place n was still made to wait for 15 mins before they gave me a table. The ambience & decor is great. Not too noisy as its open and majorly filled with foreigners, it actually feels you are abroad. The steaks are just too good (mouth watering), the captain hardly knowns what he sells n is bad with words. Pathetic service (understatement). I wonder how do they get so much of foreign crown with such levels of service. Perhaps we are Indians thats why treated badly!! A nice place to go on a weekend brunch, calm and relaxing but please be ware of the service levels and dont complain if you go there (as no one would listen anyways!!)
