"Sunday Brunch @ Bean Here (The Solitaire)"
It turns out 'Bean Here' has been shifted to the 7th floor, which is a good move really because now the coffee-shop has a good view, more space and light.
The brunch includes unlimited Carlsberg beer...but that's about it in the drinks dept. besides a couple of usual buffet drinks like lime-juice and buttermilk. A couple of appetizers, some salads, soups - all of which were very predictable but tasted good; A live chaat counter and pasta counter - the pasta wasn't bad; A multi-cuisine main-course which was good but boring; and a handful of desserts - some good, some avoidable. If it didn't get so warm when the sun comes about, this might have made a nice place to hang around a while.
* 12.30-3.30; ~Rs. 400

"Bean there done that"
Erm...Shouldn’t coffee shops have coffee?! In fact, I was expecting a good variety of it owing to the name, which I presume implies coffee beans and not leguminous plants. And so, it was baffling to discover that the menu didn’t have a beverage page at all. On inquiry somebody gave me a loose sheet with a household beverage list which really left me scratching my head.
Surprisingly, they had an impressive wine/alcohol menu...and the rest of the a la carte menu wasn’t bad either – the food sounded interesting – Multicuisine as usual, from desi chaat to fancy continental descriptions. I was about to order a meal when my eye unexpectedly caught completely misplaced punctuation marks and horrendous spelling mistakes (like 'Rose Marry' instead of 'Rosemary'). I was concerned the food would arrive with similar inaccuracy.
All these blatant errors seemed out of character for a swanky star-hotel ('star' being a rating of high standards and perfection). In appearance, the coffee-shop was quite plush with sofas and a quirky woodwork ceiling. In fact, it felt less like a relaxed café and more like a lenient fine-dine restaurant with a TV. Having weighed my options, I was contemplating a quiet escape out of there when an enthusiastic waiter suggested I at least try the lunch buffet that afternoon. He was such a chatty fellow, that against my good sense I stayed.
The buffet was very basic and catered to the usual office-crowd. Crammed in a small buffet space – A couple of juices, two soups, some boring salads, live kheema/aloo-paav and grilled-vegetable counters, a very predictable dominantly North Indian main-course, and a handful of desserts. In all fairness, the food wasn’t bad...I actually enjoyed the soups and desserts and some of the other stuff. Perhaps, I should have taken a chance and tried something off the menu. Yet in the end, I still had to almost demand a coffee, and after some sheepish caffeine-related babbling from the acting-manager, I got a cup of the only kind of coffee they had – Regular - which came with a South-Indian flava. But though it lacked panache, it did taste good.
The Solitaire Hotel is less than a year old – The smell of fresh varnish is still in the air, there are still rough edges and unfinished odd-jobs. Most apparent of all is the inexperience of the staff. They still have ropes to learn and creases to smooth...To begin with, they have to get coffee into their coffee-shop.
